The Smart Home Devices From CES 2023 We Can't Wait to Try

For smart home enthusiasts, the holidays don’t really end until CES, and this year was no exception. The annual Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas came back with a vengeance after a couple quite COVID years. As always, it was a combination of the futuristic, the game-changing, and the downright weird. Here are some of our favorites. [allconnect-widget]

Schneider Home Energy Management system

What we like: 
  • Complete smart home energy ecosystem
  • Great for controlling energy usage
  • Away Mode lets you turn off non-essential items while you’re away
Sustainability was the word on everyone’s lips at CES this year, and Schneider Electric’s new smart home energy-use ecosystem was one of the most practical products we saw (one word you don’t always use a lot at CES). But that practicality didn’t stop it from taking home a CES Innovation Award. The system is essentially everything you need to manage your home’s energy needs. That includes a home battery, solar inverter, electrical panel, connected power outlets, smart switches, and even an EV charger — all managed through Schneider’s app. Devices can be purchased one at a time, or as a complete system. 

GE Profile Smart Mixer

What we like: 
  • Auto-sensor monitors consistency and controls speed
  • Voice control through Alexa and Google Home
  • Integrated scale and timer
KitchenAid might finally have a challenger to its iconic stand mixer. The GE Profile Stand Mixer comes decked out with the usual kitchen gadget features: built-in scale and timer, voice control, and a dedicated app.  But what makes this smart mixer genuinely useful is its Auto Sense mode. Any baker will tell you that finding the right consistency is essential, and the GE Profile takes the guesswork out of it. Once your egg whites have achieved perfectly stiff peaks, for instance, the mixer will automatically shut off. And unlike most products at CES, you can actually purchase it right now through Crate and Barrel. 

Masonite M-Pwr Smart Door

What we like: 
  • Video doorbell
  • Smart lock
  • Motion-activated lighting
  • Hardwired to your electrical system
The internet of things has finally come for your front door. Masonite’s latest door is full of every  smart feature you can imagine: a smart deadbolt, keypad, video doorbell, and automated lighting. It’s even built with a backup battery in case your power goes out. The Masonite M-Pwr Smart Door isn’t cheap — it currently retails for $6,500 — but it is one sharpest looking smart home devices we saw at CES this year. 

Kaltech Fresh Food Keeper

What we like: 
  • Keeps food fresh for more than two weeks
  • 10-liter capacity
  • Elegant design
If you find yourself stuck with stale bread and fruit regularly, Kaltech’s new Fresh Food Keeper might be the kitchen gadget you need. It plugs into an electrical outlet and harnesses a process called photocatalysis, which is typically used for things like sterilization and water filtration, to keep your food fresh for longer. The Japanese company says it will extend the shelf life of most food items by more than two weeks. 

Withings U-Scan pee sensor

What we like: 
  • Instantaneous health data
  • Tracks ketones, vitamin C, pH levels, and menstrual cycles
  • Recommends specific recipes and actions based on urinalysis
We know, a “pee sensor” isn’t probably at the top of your smart home wish list. But with all the interest around biohacking, it makes sense to utilize all the health data you can get. The Withings U-Scan sits at the front of your toilet bowl, analyzes your urine, and sends you the results on your phone.  It can analyze things like pH for protein-vegetable balance, ketones for energy metabolism, and vitamin C levels, and it even suggests specific recipes or advice like “drink two glasses of water.”

Shelly Plus Smoke alarm

What we like: 
  • Battery-powered
  • Sound and light alarms
  • Sends notification to your phone
  • Affordable
There have been plenty of smart smoke detectors before, but none of them have quite checked every box the way European device maker Shelly does. It has both audio and visual alarms, and sends a notification to your phone for when you’re away from the house. The Shelly Plus can also be synced with other smart home devices to do things like unlock doors, activate emergency lighting, and turn off appliances when it detects a fire.

The bottom line

Whether you want an app for your toilet or you just want to turn off the lights with your phone, most of us already use smart home technology to some degree. These gadgets from CES are at the forefront, but you can check out some of our tried-and-true favorites below:
