Summer is just around the corner. Can you feel it? The days are getting longer, the sun’s getting warmer and we’re all getting ready to enjoy some time outdoors. And where better to spend it than in our very own outdoor areas? Whether you have an expansive backyard or a small patio, getting it prepped for the summer season can help you make the most of the coming months. And one item can help you totally transform your space in a snap: the outdoor area rug.

With a simple span of fabric, you can take your outdoor space from so-so to spectacular. Seriously. Don’t believe us? Here are three reasons you really need an outdoor area rug this summer.

Create designated seating areas

Outdoor furniture is great. It’s sturdy and it can withstand the elements. It’s often not the most inviting, though. The necessity for something that’s going to hold up over time means you usually have to sacrifice comfort. So how do you invite people to gather and take a load off? Set your furniture up around an outdoor area rug.

Laying down a rug transforms a collection of outdoor furniture into a designated seating area, inviting your friends and family to enjoy the space. It also helps you dictate your outdoor area’s flow, which can be challenging when you don’t have walls to give you parameters. Having a defined outdoor space makes it easier for people to get comfortable in it, so it’s worth the effort. And, fortunately, with a rug, setting up your designated relaxation space doesn’t take much effort at all.

Invite barefoot hangouts

One of the best things about the summer season is that we can skip the excess layers of clothing. So why keep our feet under wraps, too? There’s something freeing about being barefoot, and studies have shown that earthing/grounding (basically, walking barefoot outside) can be great for our health. So slip out of those shoes and head outside!

The problem? Even when you’ve got a newly finished deck or beautiful stone patio, the elements don’t always make it kind to your feet. The summer sun can make surfaces uncomfortably hot to trod and anyone who’s ever had a splinter has a healthy fear of scooting across wood surfaces without shoes.

An outdoor area rug changes the game, giving you a safe, even surface to confidently stride over. Let barefoot season begin!

Tie the space together

Does your patio, deck or backyard look unfinished? If so, the thing you might be missing is an outdoor area rug. Lay one down and the entire outdoor space suddenly looks like it was designed. You could have the most boring outdoor furniture paired with minimal accessories. The right rug will still give the area that wow factor.

The trick is to scale your rug — or rugs — to your space. If you’ve got a small patio, you probably only need a single, small-ish rug to make the whole area feel put together. If, however, you’ve got a large, open backyard, play with a few rugs to make the space feel cohesive and thoughtfully designed. You get bonus points if you overlap your rugs since texture is trending both indoors and out right now.

If you’re looking for a way to take your time outside up a notch this summer, go find an outdoor area rug you love. Because it brings the comfort of the indoors out and helps you create cohesion in your yard, it invites you to soak up the sun. And what’s not to love about something that gets us all into tfresh air more often?
