The star of your bedroom may be the bed, but don’t count out nightstands as an essential part of the room. A bedroom without a bedside table means that things like your clock, smartphone, books and lamps are without a home.

When choosing nightstands, be mindful of the space available. Smaller spaces may not be able to handle more than one bedside table. Mix it up, if you are so inclined; the matching nightstand rule was made to be broken.

Don’t be afraid to get creative; consider side tables or end tables as options. A Moroccan pouf or cube ottoman with a tray on top also are alternatives to traditional nightstands. Finally, keep in mind your mattress height; you’ll want to make sure your table isn’t too high or low.

Modern Nightstands

CB2 SAIC Sling Nightstand/Side Table

If you are a non-conformist, the SAIC Sling Nightstand/Side Table is for you. The sophisticated piece ($249) was designed for CB2 in collaboration with students at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. It’s on-trend in a hand-finished brass tone and features a leather sling for magazines, books or other items.

West Elm Penelope Nightstand

Break up the hard edges and angles in a bedroom with a pair of Penelopes ($349-$399), available in two sizes (18″ or 24″ round) designed to fit any space. One drawer is the perfect catch-all for all the clutter you’d rather not leave out. The striking look of marble with a warm wood stain, antique brass detailing and tapered legs add a mid-century touch.

Crate&kids Campaign Nightstand

If you’re looking to add a pop of color to your bedroom, give the Campaign nightstand ($299) a look. Available in bright fuchsia, kelly green or white, with brass-finished brackets and pulls, it’s bound to add life to the room.

Urban Outfitters Metal Accordion Side Table

We all need a little industrial chic in our lives, and the Accordion Side Table ($79) by Urban Outfitters delivers. The tray top is removable for when you crave breakfast in bed. The table, available in an antique bronze or brass finish, works well as a nightstand for a small space because it can be folded up and stored when not needed.

Gus Modern Wilson End Table

The two-tone look in walnut and white lacquer make this simple, modern table ($399) a fresh nightstand option. The boxy design may appear no-frills, but the walnut woodgrain and glossy white lacquer offer rich detailing, and the self-closing drawer adds a nice touch.

Ikea PS 2014

The creative use of individual, colorful stacking trays give this Ikea nightstand ($69) its function and beauty. Each plastic tray serves as a storage spot, and you can stack them however you like. If you’re partial to understated elegance, an all-white version is available.

Casabianca Furniture Bari 1-Drawer Nightstand

Add a contemporary edge to your bedroom with this barely-there nightstand by Casabianca ($450). The combination of glass, stainless steel hardware and a floating glossy black, red or white drawer hold your bedside necessities stylishly and architecturally.

South Shore Gravity 2-Drawer Nightstand

This simple nightstand may be classic in styling, but the gray-wash tone is modern. And for $100, there’s no excuse for having a nightstand-free bedroom any longer. It’s a great option if you’re looking for a piece that offers more storage.

Room & Board Hudson C-Table/Nightstand

If you’re ready for a quality investment, the Hudson nightstand ($599) is waiting. Made in the USA and available in a selection of stains, the single ash or maple drawer sits atop a steel base. Leave the clever C-shaped base open, or use the space underneath for books, a basket or an ottoman.

Vig Furniture Modrest 2-Drawer Nightstand

The clean-lined Modrest nightstand ($450) features an interesting asymmetrical detail. White painted glass gives it a fresh, modern look regardless of how long you’ve owned it. The two large drawers will hold nearly anything you keep around your bed.

The bottom line

Whichever style you choose, make the look your own; just remember to consider function as well as style when selecting a modern nightstand for your bedroom. We hope these ideas have inspired you!
