5 Tricks to Make Downsizing Easier

Downsizing has become a way of life. Whether it's a forced move due to life changing circumstances or a choice to simplify, downsizing your home is a common choice. The mega mansions of the 1990's are making way for smaller, more manageable dwellings as the culture pulls back from conspicuous consumption for a variety of reasons. While downsizing is easily argued as a wise choice in many cases, it remains very difficult for some to greatly reduce their living space, having grown used to the practically unlimited space in many modern homes. To make the transition easier, here are downsizing tips to help you downsize before a move.

Trick 1: Make Lists

These lists include items that you absolutely can not live without. These items with sentimental or practical value will move with you regardless of the change in home size. In addition, create lists of things that you can give away to charity or friends. You will be surprised that by writing down all your belongings, how much stuff has been collected over the years. Things that you are unsure of at this time can be placed on the storage unit list. This list includes things that you want to keep but simply don't have the room. A local storage unit (or several) is a perfect solution, allowing one to keep items nearby for access but out of the new downsized dwelling.

Trick 2: Give Away, Don't Throw Away

Try not to throw much in the garbage when downsizing your home. Not only will it be psychologically better knowing that your unused stuff is helping others, it's a true benefit to local charities to take your unneeded things. In addition, be sure to get a tax receipt for your donation. This can help greatly come tax season to reduce the amount owed to Uncle Sam.

Trick 3: Get Rid of Everything You Will No Longer Need

This includes things like lawn tractors, if you are moving to a condo. Likewise, snow shovels, rakes, garden equipment, hoses, tools and other items suitable only for those with property should be quickly jettisoned. Once again, give these items to charity or hold a yard sale to raise cash when downsizing your home. Remember, one man's junk is another man's treasure. Only toss belongings in the garbage if you have exhausted the other routes of disposal.

Trick 4: Start Early and Segment the Work

Downsizing is something that is impossible to do at the last minute. Start at least 90 days prior to the scheduled move. Work in sections around the home. Do the basement and attic first, as that will cause the least disruption to everyday life. Save your most lived-in areas for last. If you start early and segment the work into units, it will be much easier.

Trick 5: Bring in a Mediator

Invite a friend or family member over to look at the stuff you want to keep in your new, smaller home. Listen to their unbiased opinion of the worth of keeping things you are on the fence about. An outside voice will often guide you correctly when you are emotionally torn about specific items.
